Johns Creek, GA - January 24,
2017 - Kimberly Flowers, of Duluth,
weighed 307 pounds in February of 2016 when she walked into Medical Fitness and
Wellness Group of Johns Creek for a weight loss consultation. Kimberly’s primary care physician, Dr.
Reshma Shah, of Perimeter North Family Medicine, advised her to start working
with a personal trainer and nutritionist or consider Bariatric surgery as a
last resort which Kimberly was vehemently opposed to. Little did she know that
less than one year later she would be 100 pounds lighter and able to do things
in life again she never imagined.
There are many reasons Kimberly walked through our door that
day, but one that was close to her heart involved the untimely death of her
brother, Keith, due to a car wreck. She
was on a mission to lose the weight in memory of him, and to be able to do the
things in life that were currently out of reach.
At 50, Kimberly has struggled with
weight issues her entire life. She
tried several times to lose weight using traditional and non-traditional
methods, but found it a struggle to keep sustained weight loss. Five years ago, due to the excessive weight
and arthritis, she had both knees surgically repaired with partial knee
replacements by Dr. Michael Morris at Resurgens in Lawrenceville. Additionally, Kimberly had limited range of
motion in her knees and her overall walking gait suffered ultimately leading to
back, hips, and neck issues. She needed
a program that would address her holistically.
Not just for weight loss, but a Corrective Exercise Program as well to
get her moving properly as she began to lose weight.
Kimberly met with Mike Hardy, a Corrective Exercise
Specialist, a certified Nutrition Coach, and owner of Medical Fitness and
Wellness Group in Johns Creek. Mike and
the Medical Fitness Group offered her a complete solution. She would address her weight issue through a
blood sugar stabilization program by balancing her hormones through food. She would tackle her dysfunctional gait, and
muscle imbalances through encouraged behavior change, a comprehensive
Corrective Exercise Program, and, of course, supportive counseling by a
certified Nutrition Coach throughout the process. “I got so much more than a personal trainer!,” said Kimberly of her
experience at Medical Fitness and Wellness Group.
"Our program is not a diet. In fact, we call it the un-diet," said owner Mike Hardy. It
is a better approach to eating that will balance your blood sugar, and combined
with exercise, it will release stored fat, protect lean muscle, eliminate
cravings, and increase energy throughout the day. When you skip a meal, restrict calories or carbs, your blood
sugar drops and it signals your body to burn muscle, hold on to fat, then your
energy crashes, and cravings increase. On the other hand, if your blood sugar is stable,
your body will release stored fat, protect lean muscle, eliminate cravings, and
increase energy. “It surprised me most
that the nutrition program was just so easy to slide into and sustain. I can
live this program for the rest of my life,” said Kimberly. This program doesn’t just work for some
people, it works for everyone, and is based on proven science.
Prior to meeting Mike, Kimberly was in a sedentary job as Controller at
Howard Brothers, Inc., and did not make her fitness or exercise a part of her
routine. Since starting to work with
Mike, she now exercises an average of five times a week, and fitness and
nutrition are among her top priorities.
Dr. Morris continues to work with Mike in keeping Kimberly’s knees up to
the task of her workout program.
Now that Kimberly has
reached her 100 pound loss milestone, she has her sights set on her ultimate
goal, which is to get to 157 pound weight loss. We have no doubt that she will meet this goal because she has not
only learned how to lose weight and keep it off, but changes in her behavior
are now apparent after being on the program for just under one year.
